Arsenal crushes Sheffield to continue chasing the English Premier League leaders

Arsenal equaled its biggest away victory in the English Premier League with a 6-0 win over Sheffield United on Monday, after scoring five goals in the first half and moving two points closer to leaders Liverpool in an exciting title race.

Arsenal, led by coach Mikel Arteta, is in third place with 61 points after 27 matches, one point behind Manchester City, second in the standings. Thanks to today’s landslide victory, Arsenal has a much better goal difference than Liverpool and City.

Sheffield is at the bottom of the standings with only 13 points, 11 points behind the safety zone.

Arsenal was fierce in attack and was able to penetrate Sheffield’s defense easily from the beginning. Martin Odegaard opened the scoring for his team with a goal in the fifth minute with a shot from the middle of the penalty area after a wonderful pass from his teammate Declan Rice.

More bad news came for goalkeeper Ivo Grbic, in a match in which six different players scored.

Jayden Bogle scored an own goal in the 13th minute, and Gabriel Martinelli’s goal two minutes later led to large numbers of Sheffield fans leaving the stadium.

Kai Havertz added a goal in the 25th minute, and Rice made it 5-0 six minutes before the break.

Ben White concluded Arsenal’s goals in the 58th minute, and goalkeeper Grbic prevented the visiting team from scoring the seventh goal when he brilliantly blocked Gabriel Jesus’ shot, which seemed to be heading into the top corner of the goal.

The big score in the first half seemed to threaten the record for the biggest win in the league with a score of 9-0, but the Sheffield fans were relatively spared due to Arteta’s changes, who decided to withdraw striker Bukayo Saka after 45 wonderful minutes.

Arsenal equaled the biggest win they had ever achieved away from home in the English Premier League when they beat West Ham United 6-0 on February 11. Arsenal previously won 7-1 over Aston Villa in 1935.

Arsenal made history today by becoming the first team in the different levels of the English Premier League to win three away matches by more than five goals. It also became the second team to score at least five goals in three consecutive away matches in the top flight since Burnley in September 1961.

Sheffield lost their last four matches at home in all competitions by a score of 21-2.
