On Thursday, the Catalan Supreme Court convicted former Brazilian footballer Dani Alves of sexually assaulting a woman in a nightclub in Barcelona in 2022, and sentenced him to four and a half years in prison.
The court also obligated Dani Alves to pay 150,000 euros ($162,990) to the victim.
The court said in a statement: “The punishment came after it was proven that the victim did not consent, and there is evidence in addition to the plaintiff’s testimony, which means rape was proven,” while Alves said that the matter was consensual with the victim and the public prosecutor was demanding that he be imprisoned for nine years.
The 40-year-old former Barcelona defender was arrested in January last year in the Spanish city and has been detained in prison since then.
