Atletico Madrid suffered a shocking 0-2 loss away from home to Cadiz, today, Saturday, as the humble team achieved its first victory in the Spanish Football League in 6 months and the third in 28 matches this season.
Atletico’s slim hopes of competing for the league title received a new blow today, and are in real danger of not finishing the season in the top four.
Coach Diego Simeone’s team is in fourth place with 55 points, 5 points ahead of Athletic Bilbao, fifth in the standings, which visits Las Palmas tomorrow, Sunday, while Real Madrid leads the standings with 66 points.
The hosts succeeded in scoring against Atletico Madrid through a powerful header from striker Juanmi 24 minutes after the start of the match.
Cadiz has not advanced in any league match since last December 10 against Osasuna, but the visitors were then able to come back in the match that ended in a 1-1 draw.

When Atletico pressed for an equaliser, Juanmi secured victory for Cadiz with a shot from close range after a defensive error in the 64th minute when Gabriel Paulista, the last defender, missed an easy header while trying to clear the ball from the edge of the area.
This is Atletico’s seventh loss in 14 away matches this season, achieving only 15 points out of a possible 42 points.
Cadiz remained in 18th place after raising its score to 22 points, but now it is only two points away from the safety zone and the 17th place occupied by Celta Vigo, which visits leaders Real Madrid tomorrow, Sunday.
In other matches, Real Sociedad ended a series of 4 matches without a win, and narrowly defeated its host Granada 3-2.
Sociedad’s goals were scored by Nigerian Sadiq Omar (33rd minute), Robin Le Normand (80th minute), and Portuguese Andre Silva (85th minute), and Granada’s goals were scored by Albanian Mirto Uzuni (21st minute and 45th minute + 3 from a penalty kick).
Sociedad temporarily advances to sixth place with 43 points, one point ahead of Real Betis, who will play against Villarreal tomorrow, Sunday.
Valencia regained the winning tone after 3 matches during which it did not taste victory by overcoming the obstacle of its guest Getafe 1-0. Valencia’s only goal was scored by Hugo Duro (40th minute).
Coach Ruben Baraja’s team raised its score to 40 points in eighth place, while Getafe’s score froze at 35 points in eleventh place.
