He explained that bipolar disorder has two types, the first type has many manic episodes and few depressions, adding that the symptoms of a depressive episode are a bad mood and extreme sadness.
He emphasized that during manic episodes, a person sleeps very little. He may sleep for only two or three hours and then wake up fully active. He may not sleep at all for two days. He also has a lot of movement and unusual activity. He talks a lot, and his speech is incoherent. Uncontrolled and sometimes unacceptable behavior.
He added that the patient during an episode of mania is not clairvoyant, does not realize that he is sick, and is not good at judging matters during this period, and may lead to the occurrence of major delusions.
Regarding the second type of bipolar disorder, Dr. Mohamed Mahmoud Hamouda said that depressive episodes occur frequently with mild manic episodes, adding that the symptoms of depression that appear are severe and he does not have any activity, is not nervous, and his sleep is little, but better than the first type of disorder, as The patient may remain in the second type for about 5 hours.
Regarding the causes of bipolar disorder, the psychiatry consultant said that they include genetic, biological, social and psychological factors, explaining that genetics causes the disorder to be transmitted to children, and biological factors are an imbalance of certain neurotransmitters in the brain.
He pointed out that the patient does not feel that he is sick during a manic episode, and he can harm himself or those around him, so his family must know the symptoms and seek help from a doctor.
He added that treatment is medicinal in manic episodes to the point of hospitalization, because the patient is nervous and violent and harms others, and most of the causes of death of patients with bipolar disorder are due to stress as a result of lack of sleep for days on end. Treatment also includes electrotherapy sessions to regulate the brain’s rhythm.
