Books – Muhammad Qadous;

Al-Azhar International Center for Monitoring and Electronic Fatwa confirmed that the Tahajjud prayer is a Sunnah on the authority of our Master, the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him. Where it was reported from him, peace and blessings of God be upon him, that he said: “The most beloved prayer to God is the prayer of David, peace be upon him, and the most beloved to God is the fasting of David. He made a mistake, and he fasted one day and broke his fast one day.” [متفق عليه]

Al-Azhar International added to the fatwa on its personal page on Facebook: The Tahajjud prayer is a voluntary prayer whose time begins after the Isha and Tarawih prayers and continues until the end of the night.

The center explained that the best time to perform Tahajjud prayer is the last third of the night, or close to dawn, as it is the time of magic, reverence, and the manifestation of the divine blessings on those who stand up, seek forgiveness, and remember.

Al-Azhar confirmed to the fatwa that the Tahajjud prayer is distinguished from other night prayers in that it takes place after a Muslim sleeps briefly, after which he gets up to perform the Tahajjud prayer in the middle of the night, and prays two light rak’ahs, then after that he prays as many rak’ahs as he wants, two rak’ahs by rak’ah, and performs the Witr prayer at the end of it.

On the authority of Abdullah bin Omar, may God be pleased with them both, he said: The Prophet, peace and blessings of God be upon him, said: “The night prayer is two by two, so if you want to leave, perform a rak’ah that will be sufficient for the length of time you have prayed.” [متفق عليه].
