An Egyptian human rights lawyer revealed that the Egyptian authorities decided to imprison 10 defendants who were arrested during a solidarity stand with the Palestinians on Wednesday, and to charge them with “spreading false news” and “terrorist group participation.”
The lawyer for the Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights, Nabih Al-Janadi, wrote on his Facebook page: “The State Security Prosecution decided to detain the defendants for 15 days pending investigations in Case No. 1277 of 2024, in which they are accused of participating in a terrorist group and spreading false news.”
The Egyptian Initiative had announced earlier Thursday that the authorities had arrested 10 people after a stand in solidarity with the Palestinians, which coincided with the day Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi was sworn in on Wednesday.
About 200 people demonstrated in front of the Journalists Syndicate building in Cairo on Wednesday, waving the Palestinian flag and chanting slogans denouncing normalization with Israel and calling for “opening the Rafah crossing,” according to the Associated Press.
Since the outbreak of war between Israel and Hamas on October 7, Egyptian authorities have arrested dozens of pro-Gaza demonstrators, according to a report issued by the Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights.
Arrests from homes…the number of those arrested in Egypt after the “Support for Palestine” demonstrations
The number of detainees in Egypt against the backdrop of demonstrations in support of the Palestinians, in light of the continuing war between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip, has risen to at least 56 people, according to human rights lawyer, Khaled Ali.
Thousands of Egyptians demonstrated on the twentieth of last October, in Tahrir Square and various parts of Egypt, in support of Gaza.
Parties loyal to the authority had called for demonstrations in specific areas, not including Tahrir Square, but some demonstrators broke the rule and entered the square that day, and the police forces faced them with arrests at the time.
