The Economic Court of Appeal decided today, Wednesday, to postpone the appeal submitted by Graphic designer Ghada Waly She was sentenced to 6 months in prison and fined 10,000 pounds, on charges of stealing a Russian artist’s drawings, for the next June 9 ruling session.

Ghada Waly came to court to attend the first session of the appeal against her 6-month imprisonment, accompanied by her husband and her personal lawyer.
Ghada Waly’s lawyer requested clemency against his client, and that the case be referred to a technical expert. Ghada Waly’s lawyer also appealed the ruling issued at the first instance.

– Using the Russian artist’s drawings without his consent or knowledge.
The Cairo Economic Misdemeanor Court ruled to punish Ghada Wali, the graphic designer, with six months’ imprisonment, fine her 10,000 pounds, and oblige her to pay temporary compensation of 100,000 pounds, in the case of the Russian visual artist “Georgy Kurasov” accusing her of violating his material and literary rights, stealing his own drawings, and using them without permission. His permission or knowledge to carry out “graffiti” inside the “subway” stations.
Case details:
1- In 2022, Ghada Waly obtained a tender to implement artistic and advertising works for the third line of the metro at the stations of Heliopolis, Girls’ College, Bab Al-Shaareya, Abbasiya, and Alif Residences.
2- The work was carried out in 4 stations, but it was not implemented in the fifth station, which is one thousand homes.
3- In May 2023, the Russian visual artist filed a complaint against Ghada Waly, accusing her of violating his intellectual property rights.
4- On December 24, 2022, the prosecution began investigations into the incident and ordered the case to be referred for criminal trial before the Economic Court.
5- On January 8, 2024, the court held the first session of the trial and reserved the case to pronounce the ruling in the January 30 session.
6- Georgi Kurasov confirmed that Ghada Wali used 4 of his own paintings in the Girls College Metro Station project and that the paintings are available on his website in the section of sold and painted assets during the years 1995, 2001, 2005 and 2012.
Who is Ghada Wali?
– Graphic designer, born in 1990, graduated from the Graphic Design Department at the German University in Cairo in 2011.
She traveled to Italy in 2015 to study at the University of Florence, which nominated her for the Forbes magazine international competition.
She represented Egyptian women at the World Youth Forum in November 2017 in Sharm El-Sheikh.
With her sister Yasmine, she presented the “Egypt Visual Identity” project at the World Youth Forum.
Forbes chose her as one of the 30 best designers in Europe under the age of 30 in 2017.
-Won the silver medal at the International Design Awards in Italy.
She received the AWDA and AIAP Women in Design Award in Milan, in recognition of influential women in this field.
