Jinan, June 15, 2024 (Xinhua) – The results of official data issued by the Chinese National Health Commission showed a record high recorded by the country in 2023 in terms of voluntary blood donations, recording a total of 16.99 million donations, an increase of 5.9 percent from 2022.
The results of the aforementioned statistics were published during a national event hosted by the city of Jinan, the capital of Shandong Province in eastern China, last Friday to celebrate World Blood Donor Day.
Voluntary blood donation is the main source of blood for clinical use in China. According to a report issued by the World Health Organization, China is among the best countries in the world in terms of numbers of voluntary blood donations, levels of blood quality and safety, and the standard for clinical use of blood.
However, Wu Debi, a veteran hematologist from Jiangsu Province in eastern China, warned of an imbalance facing the country in terms of supply and demand for blood, adding: “It is necessary to address structural and seasonal blood shortages.”
A senior official with the National Health Commission pledged to improve China’s legal system for blood donation and blood use management, underscoring the need to strengthen clinical management of blood use in medical institutions and improve blood use.
As stipulated in the Chinese Blood Donation Law that came into effect in 1998, China encourages healthy citizens between the ages of 18 and 55 to donate blood voluntarily.
