Defending champion Italy recovered from the shock of receiving a record early goal against Albania within 23 seconds, starting its campaign in the 2024 European Football Championship with a 2-1 victory on Saturday in front of large fans who supported the opponent.

Nadim Bajermi took advantage of a weak throw-in from Federico Demarco and slotted the ball past Gianluigi Donnarumma, scoring the fastest goal ever at a European Championship.

Italy previously won the tournament title in the 1998 and 2020 editions, and came in second place in 2000 and 2012.

Expectations do not indicate that Albania has a great chance of qualifying for the second round of the difficult group, which also includes Croatia and Spain, the two sides of the European Nations League final last year.
