It is doubtful if there was anyone who thought that at the end of the first cycle in the group stage of Euro 2024, the two teams that will have 3 points are Romania and Slovakia. After the impressive victory of the Romanians over the Ukrainians, Slovakia surprised the Belgian team tonight (Monday) with a great 0:1, and took an important step in the fight for the ticket to the round of 16.
The game opened with Belgian control when Romelu Lukaku recorded a series of misses in the first minutes, but the Slovaks took an early lead. Jeremy Doku lost a ball near the box, Yorai Kotska kicked a ball that Kuan Castells deflected and on the rebound was Ivan Schranz who scored in the seventh minute and stunned the crowd in Frankfurt. The Red Devils pressed for an equalizer and saw big misses from Alejandro Trussard and Lukaku once again, while at the other end Lukasz Hersalin pulled off a huge save from Castells.
The second half continued the Belgian dominance, until in the 56th minute, Lukaku celebrated the equalizer, but the goal was disallowed due to a difference by the striker during the match. Dominic Tedesco brought Johan Bakayoko off the bench and changed to a particularly attacking formation, and in the 62nd minute the winger almost got the long-awaited goal, if not for the save from the line by David Hanzko. In the 86th minute, Lukaku’s heart was broken once again, this time his goal was disallowed after Luis Opanda touched his hand during the move. The drama stretched until the last seconds, but it was not enough for Tedesco’s team, who started the tournament on the left foot. Slovakia in a huge celebration with one of the team’s most impressive victories ever.
