Bruno Fernandes, score: 6
He was good throughout the match and didn’t give up even when the Selecao fell behind
Robin Harank, score: 4
A decent game from the stopper overall, but his unfortunate own goal opened the door for a Portuguese comeback
The Portugal national team beat the Czech Republic 1:2 last night (Tuesday) and opened its way to Euro 2024 on the right foot. Roberto Martinez’s team did not convince and fell behind surprisingly, but completed a tremendous turnaround thanks to a dramatic goal by Francisco Conceição in the 92nd minute.
In the first half, the Selção controlled the ball and put pressure on the Czechs who stood in a very low defensive line and tried to sting with explosive attacks. Cristiano Ronaldo missed several times including a very big chance in the 32nd minute, Bruno Fernandes also tried, but kicked out of bounds.
The second half started at the same pace, when the Portuguese were sitting on the Whites’ goal, Ronaldo and his friends made many misses and had difficulty defeating Yendrik Stank, who was excellent. In the 62nd minute, the Czechs proved the correctness of the sentence – whoever does not score loses. Lukas Provod received a ball and launched a wonderful kick from the edge of the box on the way to a surprising 0:1 against the course of the game.
Did you think it was over? Think again. In the 69th minute, the Salceau equalized 1:1 with an unfortunate own goal by Robin Harank. In the 92nd minute, after an intense presser by Martinez’s apprentices on Stanek’s goal, Conceição, who came on just three minutes before, took advantage of a mistake in the defense and scored from close range to establish the most dramatic 1:2 and give Portugal three precious points.
In the next game, the Celso will meet Turkey, who won an impressive 1:3 over Georgia for an intriguing battle, which will probably determine the identity of the home leader. In contrast, the Czechs will hope to recover and stay alive in the tournament against Georgia.
