Clashes between fans, torrential rain that created leaks in the roof of the stadium and flooding in the drainage canals in the stands – all this did not interfere with one of the best matches so far in Euro 2024. Tonight (Tuesday) the Turkish team beat the Georgian team 1:3 in a wonderful atmosphere of the “Turkish home crowd” , who painted red the stands that are usually painted yellow and black in Dortmund.
The stands at Signal Iduna Park were painted red by the fans of the Turkish national team, who shook from the opening whistle with tremendous singing, despite the rains and floods that followed the heavy rains in Dortmund. From the very first moment, Vincenzo Montella’s players put pressure on Giorgi Mamardashvili’s goal, when Can Ayhan hit the post in the tenth minute. Georgia woke up with Georges Mikutadze pulling off a great save from Mert Gonok, but the lead came at the other end in the 25th minute. Mert Muldor sent a tremendous ball out of the air into the connections of the Valencia goalkeeper, and ran to celebrate with his friends and fans. Kenan Yildiz celebrated the second two minutes later, but the goal was disallowed, and in the 32nd minute came the penalty. Giorgi Kochorshvili found Mikotadze with a cross, and the striker beat Gunuk from close range in a historic equalizer, with Georgia’s first ever goal at the Euros. Three minutes later he almost completed a brace, but missed from close range and sent the ball wide.
The wonderful end continued into the second half, and in the 65th minute, perhaps the goal of the tournament arrived when Arda Golar, the young talent of Real Madrid, sent a perfect ball into Mamradashvili’s connections with a great kick from outside the box and shook the stadium. Guler became the youngest player to score on his Euro debut (19 and 114 days), when he broke Cristiano Ronaldo’s record for Portugal (19 and 128 days on his Euro 2004 debut). Giorgi Kuchorshvili almost equalized once more with a fine individual effort when he sent a ball into the crossbar, but it was not enough for another Georgian equaliser. In extra time (90+7) Krem Ektorkulu took advantage of the fact that Mardashvili went up to the last corner, sprinted to the Georgian square and scored the third in front of an open goal. Three points at the end for Turkey, in the best game so far in the tournament.
