Actor Donald Sutherland has died at the age of 88

But in the world of culture: Canadian film and television actor Donald Sutherland passed away this evening (Thursday) at the age of 88. His death was confirmed by his son, actor Kiefer Sutherland.

“It is with a heavy heart that I inform you that my father has passed away. I personally think he is one of the most important actors in the history of cinema,” Kiefer said. “He never shied away from a role, good, bad or ugly. He loved what he did and did what he loved, and you can never ask for more than that. He lived his life well.”

Sutherland has a rich career of over 60 years in film and television. In 1967 he won his first major role in 12 Daredevil, alongside Lee Marvin and Charles Bronson. This role led to two more war films, in 1970: “M.A.S” directed by Robert Altman, and “The Brave in the Enemy’s Rear”. These films earned him worldwide fame.

In 2012, he participated in the movie “The Hunger Games” in the role of Snow, the president of Panem. He continued to play the same role in the sequels: “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” in 2013, “The Hunger Games: Mockingbirds – Part I” in 2014 and “The Hunger Games: Mockingbirds – The Final Chapter” in 2015.

He won an Emmy Award and a Golden Globe Award in 1995 for his supporting role in the TV movie X-Citizen. In 2002 he won the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor in the TV movie “The Road to War”. In January 2011 he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In 2017 he won an honorary Oscar for his contribution to cinema.
