It seems that the European Nations Cup held in Germany (Euro 2024) is determined to write records in the history of the continental tournament, including negative records for the match in which a referee showed the most colored cards.
The match, which saw Turkey beat the Czech Republic 2-1 on Wednesday in the last round of the Euro 2024 group stage, became the record holder in colored tournaments, as Romanian-Hungarian referee Istvan Kovacs showed 18 cards, between yellow and red.
The players’ share of the two teams was as follows:
- 5 yellow cards and 2 red cards (Czech Republic).
- 11 yellow cards (Türkiye).
It is noteworthy that referee Kovacs continued to award cards even after the match ended, as the referee issued two yellow cards to the Turkish Arda Guler and to the Czech Tomas Soszczyk, and a red card to his colleague Tomas Çori.
With its colorful card, this match surpassed 3 previous Euro matches, most notably the 2016 final between France and Portugal.
The teams that received the most red cards in the group stage are:
- Czech Republic (2 cards).
- Scotland (card).
The teams that received the most yellow cards in the group stage are:
- Türkiye (16 yellow cards).
- Czech Republic (13 cards).
- Austria (10 cards).
- Hungary (10 cards).
- Serbia (9 cards).
