Books – Nashaat Ali:

Representative Fatima Slim, a member of the House of Representatives, submitted a proposal to the Prime Minister regarding the cancellation of daylight saving time after the government’s recent decision to close public stores at ten o’clock in the evening.

The representative indicated in her proposal that a year ago, daylight saving time was put back into effect, in implementation of Law No. 24 of 2023, regarding the daylight saving time report, after President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi approved the draft law issued by the House of Representatives, after it was submitted by the government.

Slim explained that the government submitted the law to the House of Representatives aiming to rationalize and save energy in light of the economic crises that are affecting the world, and within the framework of the consumption rationalization plan that the government has been pursuing during the recent period, as the return of daylight saving time came as one of those tools that the government adopted in its austerity plan.

MP Fatima Salim added that despite this measure and other austerity measures, nothing new has occurred in energy consumption.

She continued: “On the contrary to expectations, the crisis has worsened and citizens are now suffering from power outages in homes and shops throughout the republic.”

She said: “In an ill-considered move, the government issued instructions to close shops at exactly ten o’clock in the evening, in an effort to rationalize energy and electricity consumption to confront the fuel shortage crisis that the country is suffering from, and after this decision, which did not take into account the social dimension, time became very tight.” In front of merchants and public store owners, especially in light of the continuation of daylight saving time, which increases their economic suffering in light of the current economic conditions, in addition to the expected deficit in providing various services to citizens for a long period during the day.”
