A 7.2-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Peru on Friday, but the threat of a tsunami along some coasts has passed.
The US Geological Survey said today that the earthquake was at a depth of 28 kilometers. The authority raised its estimate of the strength of the quake shortly after it occurred 8.8 kilometers from the Atiquiba area.
Authorities in Peru have issued a tsunami warning after an earthquake struck at midnight local time west of Atequipa. No casualties or damage have been reported, according to initial data.

After the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center had earlier warned of “dangerous tsunami waves expected along some coasts,” it later announced that the danger had passed. “There is no longer a tsunami threat from this earthquake,” it said.
Peru, with a population of about 33 million, is located within the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” a vast region of intense seismic activity that extends along the western coast of the Americas.
This country is struck by hundreds of detectable earthquakes every year.
