Oroville’s Fourth of July Fireworks Celebration Cancelled due to Thompson Fire

OROVILLE, Calif.— California State Parks today announced the cancellation of the City of Oroville’s Fourth of July Fireworks Celebration show tomorrow for public safety. Due to the large evacuations and damages caused by the Thompson Fire, State Parks and partner agencies including CAL FIRE, California Highway Patrol, Butte County Sheriff’s Office, Public Works, and staff from the City of Oroville, have a large number of resources responding to protect the community and get everyone back home as quickly as possible. These agencies also have employees with families displaced by these evacuations who are tirelessly assisting the community of Lake Oroville.

All of the Lake Oroville State Recreation Area (SRA) subunits are temporarily closed to allow staff to focus on fire suppression and community protection activities. State Parks anticipates the parks including camping will remain closed until Friday, July 5. However, this could be extended depending on the fire conditions.

Here are the temporary closures at Lake Oroville SRA:

• The North Forebay Day Use Area where the fireworks were being planned. North Forebay is currently being used to coordinate agencies from all over the north state assisting in the area.
• Several of the day-use areas and trails will be closed for an extended period as they are repaired and made safe again. These areas include the Burma Day Use Area and several miles of the Brad Freeman and Dan Beebe trails in the Diversion Pool and Lakeland areas.       

Donations to the Oroville Chamber of Commerce for fireworks will be used towards a community firework show to be determined by them at a later and safer date. This fireworks show was a specially permitted event with the City of Oroville and the Oroville Chamber of Commerce.
