Argentine media reported that Alvaro is one of the candidates to succeed Daniel Garnero in coaching the Paraguayan national team.

“He is no longer the coach, he has agreed to leave,” a source from Alvaro’s technical staff said without explaining the reason for the decision.

Alvaro, 61, led Costa Rica in the last Copa America but was eliminated in the group stage after finishing third in their group.

He previously led the Ecuadorian national team to the 2022 World Cup finals in Qatar.

“We thank Mr. Gustavo and his team for their dedication during their tenure as Costa Rica national team coach,” the Costa Rican Football Federation said in a statement. “We at the Federation will continue to build the path towards qualification for the 2026 World Cup.”

“We will continue to keep our fans informed of all developments and confirm our commitment to continue working for the development and success of national football.”
