(Reuters) – Fulham manager Marco Silva said his team should have won before resorting to a marathon penalty shootout after losing 16-15 to Championship side Preston North End in the longest shootout in League Cup history after Tuesday’s third-round tie ended 1-1 after normal time.

Silva, who made 11 changes to the starting line-up that played against West Ham United last Saturday, was frustrated after his team wasted a number of chances despite taking 16 shots on goal against the home side who managed just seven.
“I’m sure we did enough for 95 minutes to win the game,” Silva told reporters after the marathon penalty shootout.
“From the first minute, we controlled the game and I think we created enough chances… the crossbar denied us (Harrison Reid’s attempt). We played a lot of crosses and had a lot of chances to score.”
Fulham, whose last two Premier League games ended in 1-1 draws, host Newcastle United on Saturday.
