Bayer Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso praised his team; For his success in resisting fatigue to get the three points, after he dominated the first 60 minutes of the match against Milan, and did enough to achieve a 1-0 victory in the Champions League, yesterday, Tuesday.
Leverkusen has 6 full points, after its 4-0 victory over Feyenoord in its opening match, but it was unable to finish off Milan, despite its deserved lead, which Alonso attributed to fatigue, after the team’s 1-1 draw with Bayern Munich, on Saturday.
Alonso told Sky Sports: “It is great that German football is able to compete, and it is also good news for us. We can achieve this result against Milan.”
He continued: “The first 60 minutes were good for us, but in the end we suffered from fatigue after the match against Bayern Munich.”
He continued: “We showed spirit and character, and these three points are very good. “In the Champions League, you must know how to suffer and fight, not just play well.”
Leverkusen had a number of chances in the first half, but failed to find the back of the net.
Instead of Leverkusen killing the game, after finally taking the lead through Victor Boniface, early in the second half, it was Milan who found extra strength and threatened to snatch a draw, on more than one occasion.
Alonso said: “We had great difficulty scoring, but perhaps after the goal we changed our style very quickly. Maybe we lacked something physically, but we showed them due respect and took them seriously. “The last 20 minutes were not good at all, but the players did their best to get the three points.”
