Ethiopia has re-imposed a monthly fee of $100 on Sudanese residing in its territory to renew their visas after exempting them from these fees since last February.
The decision came suddenly this October without issuing an official announcement, which raised the concern of many Sudanese who depend on this exemption, in light of difficult economic conditions.
The new Ethiopian decision was not limited to imposing fees only, but also included additional fines in the event of late payment. According to the sources, Sudanese residing in Ethiopia must pay a daily fine of $5 if the $100 is not paid on time to renew the visa.
If the delay exceeds a full month, the amount accumulates to $250. These measures increase pressure on Sudanese residents, especially in light of the economic challenges they face both inside and outside Sudan.
The re-imposition of daily fees and fines is considered a huge burden on Sudanese who are trying to maintain their legal status in the country, while adhering to residency visas. This step may have negative effects on their living conditions, especially for those who depend on unstable work or have families and children.
