Ukraine is totally dependent on the United States and Trump has made it clear he does not want to spend any more money on Ukraine.
So I think President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will be worried and he is in deep trouble. I have met him many times and I know the prospect of a Trump return is something that has always worried him and the leadership around him.
You have to remember Zelenskyy’s experience. Before the Russian invasion, the first time he became president of Ukraine, he had dealings with Trump, who tried to shake him down.
Trump was eventually impeached after it was revealed that he had urged Zelenskyy to investigate then-Vice President Joe Biden and his son Hunter Biden in the run-up to the 2020 election.
Flagged by an unknown whistleblower who spoke of an “urgent concern” about the conversation July 25, 2020, the call came shortly after Trump had blocked the release of military aid to Ukraine.
A senior official later testified the president had made clear the release of this aid was conditional on Biden being investigated. This was denied by the White House at the time.
A trial took place that could have led to Trump being removed but in the end he was cleared.
Now, Ukraine is deep in the war and the tide has been turning as Russia has been able to get weapons from Iran and troops from North Korea, so a Trump victory will have a big impact.
If Trump turns off the tap or slows down the funding, not only could it demoralize Ukrainians, but it could also create serious shortages of weapons in particular, but also logistical support, intelligence and other things the U.S. is providing right now.
Europe is not as united and many countries don’t agree collectively with backing Ukraine and they just don’t have the spare military capacity to support Ukraine. Most have tiny militaries and they don’t have the planes, vehicles and ammunition to spare.
So I think if you’re in Ukraine right now, you’re very concerned.
