The same is true of the performances themselves, one moment we are here and the next we are not. Between pop singers who dream of America, Ed Sheeran and Rihanna to a woman from Miluymanik who sings a song of Idan Amadi, between Tiktok hits and memorial songs. But clashing with pop and trash, war with a singing competition. “The next star” is more aware this year of this mixing, which is the essence of Israeli madness.
The truly disturbing thing is not the extreme formula presented by “The Next Star”, but rather how faithfully it reflects the roller coaster of Israeli existence. We have become accustomed to an existence with one foot in the ordinary life and dreams of the world and the other foot immersed in unending disaster. We’ve gotten so used to it that this radical combination seems to us like completely natural entertainment. “The next star” sits within her people: this is the new normal.
2. And in any case, even reality shows reach a moment when the machine starts to squeak a little. Sometimes it is fatigue of the format, loss of patience of the audience or simply that there is a flashier competitor in the city. It also happens to the biggest ones: in the production of “The Next Star”, the sunset of her older sister is remembered perfectly, one must assume.
“The next star” has so far known how to extricate itself from similar pitfalls, among other things thanks to Eurovision (and impressively even in the years when this goal was taken away from it). Still, when Ness and Stila came to the table and tried to speak their language, or when the TikTok star came on stage and the whole crowd sang his hit, the generation gap was strongly felt. All of a sudden, “The Next Star” suddenly looked very old and outdated. This is how it is: when stars rise, they shine brighter than their predecessors.
