They became professional, real chefs and so did the tasks – a difficulty and challenge that I was surprised by in each new episode that the contestants managed to meet.
The big winner
In the finals, the finalists’ challenge was to take the judges on a culinary journey, with a three-course meal of their choice. Michal Epstein who finished in fourth place in the fifth season and was eliminated just before the final, has since opened Eats, a cafe in Tel Aviv. And this time she not only qualified for the final but took it by a margin, if you don’t consider the invention of the season – “general impression score for the meal”.
Throughout the season, Michal cooked simply but accurately, as she did with the crazy carrot cake, with the rockmus ice cream that the judges were delighted with. And so she did in the finals with the first dish – caramelized onions with parmesan ice cream and a pine nut cracker that earned her the higher score in the round of the first dish. Rotolo pasta with leeks and chard in a lemon butter sauce for the main course and a crazy lemon tart with almond cream, raspberries, thyme and mascarpone cream. All these led her quite safely to the first place.

And now seriously, I think every time Amichai talked about what he was going to make I raised an eyebrow, my brain couldn’t grasp the strange combinations – it sounded more like apothecary than a recipe. All this was smashed in my face, time and time again when I saw the final product and then I wanted so badly to stand in the place of the judges. His dessert course in the finals would have looked like a masterpiece.
Rachel Ben Elol who was the first to win the entrance ticket to the finals, almost fulfilled her dream in the fifth season of Master Chef but ended up in second and respectable place. Since then she managed to establish a famous sandwich empire. The dream of being first this season, burned in her from the beginning of the season for one exciting reason. Rachel lost her mother and wanted to dedicate the victory to her: “I want my mother from above to see me win, which she didn’t see last time. I came to fight only for her.”

The dessert dish consisting of a sugar dome Rachel struggled with several times until she succeeded, was not enough for her to win, and I was definitely heartbroken. I so hoped and wanted her to win mainly because of her exciting story. But this time Rachel came in third place, and it’s also definitely respectable considering the fact that this season the finalists beat real chefs.
The moment of scoring has arrived
Michal received an almost perfect score for the ice cream she served as a first course – 396 in number. From there she continued to excel and received 395 points for the Rotello portion (I drooled in front of the screen when the judges tasted it). And also in dessert she kept the same line – 396.
At the end of the scoring of the dishes prepared by the finalists, Michal was in the lead with 1,187 points, followed by Rachel with 1,171 and Amichai by a small margin with 1,167 points. But then came the invention of the season – the judges’ “general impression score”. Oh well, after each judge summarized his impression and gave an individual score to each contestant, it was finally possible to declare Michal Epstein as the Great Master Chef. But how did Ruthie Brodu say at the beginning of the final: “As far as I’m concerned, you all take first place and you’ll remember that when we get to the end.”
