The Consular Affairs Department of the US State Department announced that the Washington Embassy in Kiev will close its doors after receiving information about the possibility of a large-scale air attack.
The department added in a statement posted on the website of the US Embassy in Kiev, “Out of an abundance of caution, the embassy will be closed, and embassy employees have been instructed to shelter in place.”
The statement continued, saying, “The US Embassy advises American citizens to take shelter immediately if air raid sirens sound.”
The warning comes a day after Ukraine used American Atakms missiles to strike Russian territory, taking advantage of a recent statement issued by the outgoing administration of US President Joe Biden on the 1000th day of the war.
Russia has warned the West for months that Washington allowing Ukraine to use American, British and French-made weapons to strike the Russian interior would push Moscow to consider those NATO member states directly participating in the war in Ukraine.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said last month that Russia would respond if Ukraine struck Russia with American-made weapons.
On Tuesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin lowered the criteria under which a nuclear strike could be launched in response to broader attacks with conventional weapons, exacerbating nuclear risks at a time when tensions are rising to their highest levels in more than half a century between Russia and the West.
