In a contract for a season and a half: Maccabi Tel Aviv renewed a center from the Euroleague

Maccabi Tel Aviv announced today (Sunday) the signing of American center Trevion Williams to a one and a half year contract, after weeks of searching for a reinforcement under the baskets. The 24-year-old Williams (2.08 m) comes from Elba Berlin, the leader of the Euroleague table, in which he played in the last half of the season.

The inside player has gradually lost his place in the rotation in recent weeks following the arrival of center David McCormack. Williams’ agents were looking for an alternative destination for him as of the start of the second round in the Euroleague this week, when the possibility for Euroleague players to move between teams in the factory will be closed.

Williams’ name appeared in the yellow books already in the middle of last season and attempts were made to sign him, but the contacts did not mature and in the summer the promising center finally joined Alba Berlin in a move that surprised quite a few people on the continent. The integration of the center may push Vanin Gabriel out of the rotation, but as of this time in the club no decision has been made regarding his cut.

The current season is Williams’ second in European basketball. Last year he played for Ulm, Ben Sharaf’s current team, and was selected for the first five in the Eurocup. In addition to that he was the leading rebounder both in the continental plant and in the German league. This summer, as mentioned, he stayed in Germany but made the jump to the Euroleague.

“Terbion Williams is a player we already looked at in the summer and we really liked what we saw,” said coach Oded Ketch. “He is a versatile player with a high level basketball IQ. He will give us more depth in a faceoff position. The main goal is to get him into our rhythm as quickly as possible so that he can help us in such a busy period.”
