Saleh Al-Shehri, the first striker of the Saudi national football team, scored the first goal for Al-Akhdar from a penalty kick in more than a year.
Al-Shehri successfully executed a penalty kick that the team won against its Bahraini counterpart, on Sunday evening, in the first round of the 26th Arabian Gulf Cup, while the match ended with “Al-Ahmar” winning 3-2.
Winger Salem Al-Dosari came forward and caught the ball, then left it to his attacking colleague and retreated to the 18-zone line.
Al-Akhdar received three other penalties this year, all of which were lost.
Al-Dosari missed two goals, against Indonesia, last September, and Bahrain, in October, in the decisive round of the Asian qualifiers for the World Cup. The first match resulted in a 1-1 draw, and the second resulted in a scoreless draw.
Meanwhile, striker Abdullah Redeef missed a penalty during the goalless draw with Thailand, last January, in the group stage of the Asian Cup.
Al Shehri maintained a complete success rate when executing penalties in the first team’s shirt, scoring his third international goal.
The last previous goal for “Al-Akhdar” from a penalty kick was signed by the same player, and contributed to the 4-0 victory over Pakistan, in November 2023, in the second round of the World Cup qualifiers.
As a penalty, Al Shehri, the scorer of 14 international goals, scored during the 3-1 win over Vietnam, in September 2021, in the previous World Cup qualifiers.
