After Panama and Canada… Trump calls for America’s control over Greenland

US President-elect Donald Trump renewed his call to extend US control over the island of Greenland, after a similar call during his first term, adding Denmark to the list of allied countries he targets before he officially takes office next month.

Announcing his selection for the position of the country’s ambassador to Denmark, Trump wrote on Truth Social early Monday morning: “For purposes of national security and freedom throughout the world, the United States feels that ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity.”

These comments come after Trump threatened over the weekend that the United States would regain control of the Panama Canal if the country did not do anything to reduce shipping costs imposed on American ships.

He also previously suggested that Canada become the 51st US state, and referred to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as a “governor” of the “great state of Canada.”

Greenland, the largest island in the world, is located between the Atlantic Ocean and the Arctic Ocean, and an ice sheet covers 80% of its area. It also hosts a large US military base.

It gained autonomy from Denmark in 1979, and its Prime Minister, Moti Borup Egede, indicated that Trump’s recent calls for American control would be as meaningless as those he made in His first term.
