The extremely cold winter weather led to the disruption of flight services at three major airports in Germany: Munich, Frankfurt and Stuttgart, amid warnings of freezing rain and black ice.
Munich Airport said – in a statement on its website, according to the German channel Deutsche Welle today (Sunday) – that as a result of the expected weather conditions, flight operations may be disrupted today and flights may be cancelled, especially in the morning.
In turn, Frankfurt Airport warned travelers of the possibility of service disruptions and cancellations during the morning hours, and advised them to check the status of their flights before moving to the airport.
Indeed, bad weather conditions forced the cancellation of flights at Frankfurt Airport, including flights heading to famous European cities such as Paris, Venice, and Prague.
Meanwhile, Stuttgart Airport, located in southwestern Germany, reported delays to a number of flights due to weather conditions, despite the runway being cleaned and prepared for flight operations.
The German meteorological services had issued severe weather warnings for a number of regions in the country, especially the state of Bavaria, where freezing rain and black snow were expected.
For its part, the German railway operating company (Deutsche Bahn) warned that weather conditions may affect its operations, and reported that long-distance trains saw their services disrupted, and in some cases, trips were completely cancelled.
