La Paz, January 8, 2025 (Xinhua) – Heavy rains in the rainy season have claimed the lives of at least 16 people and affected more than 16,000 families in Bolivia since last November, authorities said on Wednesday.
Juan Carlos Calvemontes, Bolivia’s Deputy Minister of Civil Defense, said during a press conference that the heavy rains that fell from November until the first week of January caused devastation in this South American country, causing floods and deadly mudslides.
The official indicated that about 36 municipalities suffered severe damage. In the municipalities of Apollo, Lasunta and Loribay, which are all located in the La Paz administration in the west of the country, the authorities declared a “state of disaster” to deal with the effects of the disaster.
Eight of the country’s nine departments have reported weather-related problems and damage, with the exception of Oruro.
Other weather events recorded since November, including frost and hailstorms, also caused damage in five departments.
The rainy season is expected to continue until March or April 2025.
