Al-Ahly Club – the most decorated Egyptian club – mourned the death of its former player and famous television commentator Mimi El-Sherbiny today, Monday, at the age of 87 years, and the Egyptian Football Association also mourned him.

El-Sherbini, widely known as the “commentary icon in the Arab world,” excelled in the 1950s and 1960s with his club and the Egyptian national team, with whom he won the 1959 African Cup of Nations.

Al-Ahly said on its Facebook account, “Captain Mahmoud Al-Khatib, club president, and the members of the board of directors mourn with great sadness and sorrow Captain Mahmoud El-Sherbiny, the former Al-Ahly and Egypt national team player and the famous sports commentator, who passed away today. We pray to the Almighty God to bless the deceased with his vast mercy and enter his spacious paradise.” He inspires the honorable family patience and solace.”

Many Egyptian football stars in Al-Ahly and Zamalek also mourned the death of El-Sherbiny.

El-Sherbiny won 9 championships with Al-Ahly, including the Egyptian Premier League title 4 times in the seasons 1957-1958, 1958-1959, 1960-1961, and 1961-1962.

He also won the Egyptian Cup title 3 times in the seasons 1957-1958, 1960-1961, and 1965-1966.

With the Egyptian national team, El-Sherbiny won fourth place in the 1964 Tokyo Olympics.

After retiring from football at the end of the sixties, El-Sherbini turned to the world of radio and television commentary.

The Egyptian Football Association also mourned the death of El-Sherbiny.

The Federation said on its Facebook account, “The Board of Directors of the Egyptian Football Association, headed by Hani Abu Raida, members of the Board of Directors, the Executive Director, and all employees, mourns Captain Mimi El-Sherbiny, the former star of Al-Ahly Club and the Egyptian national team and one of the symbols of sports commentary, who passed away today, praying to God Almighty.” – May His mercy cover him, and inspire his family and relatives patience and solace.
