Egyptian sports commentator and former football player Mohamed Abdel Latif, known as (Mimi El-Sherbiny), died on Monday, at the age of 87, after a struggle with illness, according to what Egyptian media announced.
Football stars carried the body of the late Mimi El-Sherbiny, the former Al-Ahly star and sports commentary legend, to his final resting place after performing the funeral prayer over him at the Amr Ibn Al-Aas Mosque in Cairo, on Tuesday afternoon.
Commentators on social media expressed their sadness over the death of the well-known sports commentator, who was the former star of Al-Ahly Club and the Egyptian national team. A number of Egyptian football players in different clubs mourned him.
“The Legend of Football Commentary”
El-Sherbiny was born on July 26, 1937. He began his football career with the Egyptian Cairene Club, and his talent caught the attention of the two well-known Egyptian clubs, Al-Ahly and Zamalek.
El-Sherbiny won 9 championships with Al-Ahly Club, and in 4 seasons he won the Egyptian Premier League title with the club, which was held every year (1957-1962).
Egyptian media described him as “the legend of football commentary,” and recalled prominent comments made by him such as “a cluster of skills around his legs,” “born in the penalty area,” and “we are beautiful.”
He was a player in the Egyptian national team that won fourth place in the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, and he coached the Emirati national football team in 1957. He also coached the Emirati Al-Nasr Club and the Egyptian Ghazl Damietta Club, before retiring from coaching in the early 1980s, and limiting himself to sports commentary.
Former Egyptian football player Mohamed Abu Trika wrote on his Facebook account:
Former Egyptian football player Haitham Farouk, through his account on the X platform, formerly Twitter, described the late commentator El-Sherbiny as “the owner of a sweet voice and distinctive football terminology.” I attach a clip of an audio commentary by El-Sherbini.
Ahmed Al-Fayed commented, “He was the owner of a distinguished school. He entertained us with his comments and impartiality…”
