Maccabi Tel Aviv this evening (Thursday) avoided promotion to the Europa League playoff stage after a 3:1 loss to Bode Glimt in the freezing Norwegian cold. The Israeli champion had a hard time keeping up with the host who was better throughout most of the stages of the game, remained strong in the fight for automatic promotion to the round of 16 and left Maccabi out of the top 24 before the final round.
The opening belonged to Buda, who sat on the extension of Roi Mishpeti, but it was Dor Peretz who benefited from Dor Turgeman’s goal in the 12th minute and celebrated a surprising advantage with a dedication to Emily Demari, who was released from Hamas captivity in Gaza this week. The Norwegian equalizer came in the 39th minute after Kasper Hogg was left unguarded and struck the 1:1 before the break. Hakon Aviane took advantage of another Maccabi defensive hole to set up a turnaround at the start of the second half and Hogg completed a pair from the penalty spot after a handball from Tyrese Asante in the box to close the story.
Next week, Maccabi Tel Aviv will host Porto in Belgrade in the final round of the Europa League, when they will need a win in order to maintain a slim chance of qualifying for the next stage.
