FRANKFORT, Ky. (WSAZ) – Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear’s name has been circulating as a potential on the shortlist as a pick for the Democratic Vice President.
Beshear endorsed Kamala Harris on Monday as she hopes to garner the Democratic nominee from the DNC next month.
For Harris, winning the Democratic nomination during the DNC convention is only a small part of a long to-do list. If she becomes the nominee, she must also pick a running mate.
When asked about the potential of being on the Democratic ticket as a Vice Presidential candidate, Beshear didn’t necessarily deny that he was running but sidestepped the question.
“I don’t know how that process is going to work, but it’s flattering to be a part of it. I take it as a compliment, though, to what we’ve done in Kentucky,” Beshear said Monday during a guest appearance on MSNBC. “Well, I think if someone calls you on that, what you do is at least listen. I want the American people to know who Kentucky is and what they look like because JD Vance ain’t from here.”
During Beshear’s political career, he’s proven to be a popular choice amongst voters after he was reelected in a red state.
Beshear defeated a Trump-backed GOP challenger last year in a state that the former president won in 2016 and 2020.
“We have got to get back to being Americans and not members of a political party,” Beshear said.
If Beshear is named as the Vice Presidential candidate, acting Kentucky Lt. Gov. Jacqueline Coleman will serve out the remainder of his second term.
A regular election will follow with the candidates filing for the primary ballot.
“I wouldn’t have accepted if I wasn’t ready. I’m ready,” Coleman told reporters during an event on Monday.
