Roya News | Qatar bans romantic film due to “kisses”

  • Qatar imposes strict censorship on films in cinemas

Qatari authorities have decided to ban the romantic film “It Ends With Us” from local cinemas because it contains “kissing scenes,” according to the American magazine “The Hollywood Reporter.”

In recent years, Qatar has banned a number of films from showing in local cinemas due to the country’s “strict censorship.” Among the films banned are “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” and “Barbie.”

According to the Qatari Ministry of Justice website, the Censorship Committee for Artistic Works is responsible for reviewing artistic works from technical and thematic aspects before allowing them to be shown or circulated in the country. This is done in accordance with the laws and regulations in force to ensure the achievement of the state’s media policy, while taking into account public order, Islamic values, traditions and public morals.

In 2022, the animated film “Lightyear” was banned in Gulf countries, including Qatar, over a “same-sex kiss” scene, while the ban on “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” was linked to its inclusion of an LGBTQ character, according to the magazine.

“It Ends With Us,” starring Blake Lively and directed by Justin Baldoni, is rated PG-13. Based on the novel of the same name by Colleen Hoover, the film deals with the issue of domestic violence and the internal struggle a woman faces between staying in a toxic relationship or leaving it.

The film is set to hit theaters in the United States on Friday, and is expected to do well at the box office over the weekend, taking in $7 million in its opening Thursday, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
