The Attorney General of the Comoros announced today, Saturday, the death of Ahmed Abdou, the perpetrator of the stabbing operation that resulted in the minor injuries of President Azali Assoumani yesterday, Friday.
“He was isolated in a room to calm down yesterday after his arrest,” Attorney General Ali Mohamed said at a press conference in the capital Moroni. “When investigators came to question him this morning, Saturday, they found him lying on the floor, lifeless. The doctor came and after examining him, he was found dead.”
He added that “the investigation is ongoing to determine the circumstances or reasons that prompted the young man to attempt to assassinate the president. An investigation will also be opened to uncover the circumstances of his death,” noting that his family received his body.
The president is at home.
Comoros government spokeswoman Fatma Ahmed said Saturday morning during a press conference that Ghazali was “in very good health” and “at home with his family.”
“The president is in good condition and has no health problems. He is no longer in danger and has received stitches,” Energy Minister Abubakar Said said at a news conference in the capital Moroni on Saturday.
President Azali Assoumani, 65, “sustained minor knife wounds during the funeral” of a prominent spiritual leader, the presidency said in a statement on Friday evening.
She explained that the security services arrested the attacker.
A source close to the presidency explained at the time that “the president received the necessary care. His life is not in danger,” explaining that the perpetrator of the attack was a young “gendarme member” who joined the force in 2022.
Ghazali is a former chief of staff who came to power withMilitary coupHe was elected for a new term last January.
