Agatha All Along showrunner Jac Schaeffer

She’s back! Kathryn Hahn returns as Agatha Harkness in Marvel’s Agatha All Alongand this time, she’s looking for the Witches’ Road.

Is Agatha the villain in her own story, and what does she really want? These are all questions that we’ll have to wait to uncover, but Hahn is fantastic once again alongside a great cast that includes Aubrey Plaza.

For creator and showrunner Jac Schaeffer, she agreed with me that it was so obvious that a show with Hahn as Agatha had to be made.

“Separating the magnificence of Kathryn Hahn, and the fun of this character, in returning to Marvel and doing another show I wanted to recapture some of the fun of WandaVision and the puzzle of it, but trying to reimagine it,” she said.

“And Agatha was the perfect character to do that with. She afforded an opportunity to break open the mold, but still have the unfurling mysteries, to have the genre pieces, but in a witchy or kind of horror way.”

In the first episode, we get to see Agatha reborn, and that was a big symbol for what Schaeffer planned for the series.

“She sort of strips down,” Schaeffer said. “It’s the peeling back of the layers of Agatha, to externalize that, and also have it be so fun because it’s all the looks you recognize from WandaVision. But that is very much what Kathryn and I, and Marvel, wanted to do with the show [and] peel back the layers of of Agatha.”

“{Working with]Aubrey Plaza was like, duh,” she said. “She wrote a book on a Christmas witch, she worships the Dark Lords, she was so perfect for us. When we first started talking about it, it was that feeling of, ‘this is so right. We don’t dare hope that it would happen.’”

“And then it did. And we were counting our lucky stars. She was spectacular. She and Kathryn have this explosive chemistry. It’s actually it’s more crackly. It’s sort of like a cauldron bubbling, or a fire crackling; it’s just constant, and it was very natural.”

“Aubrey, as a performer, she’s so unexpected. She brings chaos in a really intelligent way, so as a director, it was a real privilege to work with her and see her find new things every take.”

The first episode of Agatha All Along is streaming now on Disney+, and new episodes premiere Wednesdays. Watch the full interview with Jac Schaeffer above.
