Two informed officials said on Thursday that members of the Israeli security government have been informed that it is highly likely that Yahya Sinwar, head of the Hamas political bureau, has been “killed.”
Two Israeli broadcasters, Israel Public Broadcasting Corporation (Radio Kan) and Israel’s Channel 12, also quoted officials as saying that “Sanwar had been killed.”
A joint statement by the Israeli army and the Israeli General Security Agency (Shin Bet) stated that three people, whom it described as “terrorists,” were killed during an army operation against forces in the Gaza Strip. The statement said that the army and the Shin Bet are examining the possibility that Yahya Sinwar was among the dead, indicating that it is not possible to be certain at this stage about their identities.
The statement added: “Both the Israeli army and the Shin Bet are examining the possibility that one of the terrorists who was killed was Yahya Sinwar.”
He pointed out that there are no indications of the presence of kidnappers in the area or the targeted building where the three people were killed, and that the army and Shin Bet forces continue to work in the field under the required caution measures, according to the statement.
“At this stage, it is not possible to definitively confirm the identity of the saboteurs,” according to the statement.
