The Knesset plenum approved tonight (Thursday) in second and third reading the bill to deport families of terrorists. 61 Knesset members supported the proposal, against 41 opponents.

According to the approved law, the Minister of the Interior will be entitled, after holding a hearing, to order the deportation of a family member of a terrorist, if he knew in advance of his family member’s plan to commit an act of terrorism and did not make all the necessary efforts to prevent it.

Also, the minister will be entitled to order the deportation of a family member of the terrorist if he expressed support or identification with the act of terrorism or if he published words of praise, sympathy or encouragement for an act of terrorism or a terrorist organization.

It was also determined that the validity of the deportation order against an Israeli citizen will range from 7 to 15 years. If it is a permanent or temporary resident – the deportation order will be valid for at least 10 years and no more than 20 years.

In the explanatory notes to the bill, submitted by Knesset members Hanoch Malbitsky, Eliyahu Rabivo, Almog Cohen and other members of Knesset, it is written: “In recent years, and in particular after the beginning of the Iron Swords War, which broke out following the terrorist attack that began on October 7, 2023, the cases in which civilians And holders of a permanent residence permit in Israel incite terrorism, whether by publishing direct calls to commit terrorist acts or by publishing words of praise, sympathy or encouragement for these acts, support for them or identification with them.”

MK Almog Cohen, one of the submitters of the bill, said: “We have now passed in the Knesset plenum, the law on the deportation of families of terrorists, and it has entered the law book of the State of Israel. This law is a significant and aggressive tool to create a formidable balance of deterrence and will reduce terrorism. Every damned terrorist knew that the fate of his family was in our hands. Any family of a terrorist who supports terrorism will be expelled from the country with contempt and humiliation. We will continue to fight terrorism with determination, I thank Minister Itamar Ben Gabir for mobilizing for the passage of the important law.”

The “Choosing Life” forum of the bereaved families and victims of terrorism, which was a partner in the initiative of the law, stated: “The law on the deportation of families of terrorists, which passed the second and third reading today in the Knesset plenum, is an important step and a cornerstone in the package of deterrence laws of the “Choosing life” forum of the bereaved families and victims Terrorism. We thank the chairman of the committee MK Ofir Katz, MK Almog Cohen, MK Hanoch Malibitsky and MK Eliyahu Rabivo, and all the Zionist members of the Knesset who stood by us and voted in favor of the law in the plenum.

“However, we condemn the members of the Knesset who chose for political reasons to vote against the law – a decision that does not represent the values of the State of Israel and stands against the families of the victims and victims of terrorism. We call on the general public to remember who really stands by the security of the state and against terrorism, and who chooses to protect The rights of terrorist supporters. This is an important victory for the people of Israel, and we will continue to work for legislation that will help deter and prevent terrorism.”
