US President Joe Biden, in his first speech after announcing the election results, confirmed that the transfer of power to President-elect Donald Trump next January will be peaceful.
Biden said in a speech he delivered at the White House on Thursday: “I will fulfill my oath and on January 20 there will be a peaceful transfer of power in America,” adding that he spoke with Trump and assured him that his administration will work with his team “towards a peaceful and orderly handover of power.”
Biden described his presidential term as “historic, thanks to the work you did,” praising at the same time his deputy Kamala Harris, who “ran an election campaign that inspired millions.”
Biden continued, “We must accept the choice made by the American people.” He pointed out, “We lost a battle, but the American experience must continue.”
Donald Trump has so far received 295 Electoral College votes, exceeding the 270 he needs to win, while his rival Harris has received 226 votes, according to American television networks.
American media announced Trump’s victory in more than half of the fifty American states, including key crucial states such as Georgia, Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin that voted for the Democrats in the last elections.
Trump received congratulations from Joe Biden, who defeated him in November 2020, from Barack Obama (2009-2017), who succeeded him, and from Kamala Harris, who admitted his defeat on Wednesday.
