The report confirmed that the substance that Modric consumed was similar to what Maria Sharapova consumed in 2016 at the Australian Open, which caused her to be suspended for two years in an incident that made headlines at the time.
According to Ivar Calvins, the Latvian scientist who invented the substance, it was not intended for athletes, but rather was designed for “Soviet super soldiers.” He also revealed that tons of it had previously been exported to the Russian army, while he refuses to ban it on athletes, considering that it “violates their human rights.”
Meldonium is used to treat lack of blood flow to parts of the body, especially in cases of angina or heart disease. It is manufactured in Latvia and distributed in the Baltic countries and Russia, but it has not been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration and cannot be circulated in the rest of Europe.
The future of Modric, who moved nearly 3 years ago to Chelsea for 88 million pounds sterling, became uncertain after his sample appeared positive and led to his temporary suspension by the English Football Association.
