The fall in Jaffa: several interception attempts above and below the atmosphere failed

Millions of Israelis entered the police stations early in the morning following the alarms in the center. It is still being investigated in depth, some of the lessons learned are already being applied, both in the field of interception and in the field of warning”

A missile launched from Yemen fell early in the morning (Saturday) in Jaffa, despite attempts to intercept it inside and outside the atmosphere.

The IDF is investigating why the interception attempt was unsuccessful.

Millions of Israelis entered the police stations early in the morning following the alarms heard in Tel Aviv, Lod, Rehovot, Modi’in-Maccabim-Reot, Rishon Lezion, Beer Ya’akov, Nes Ziona, Ramla, Or Yehuda, Holon, Yehud Monoson, Shoham, Gedera, Yavneh. , Kiryat Ono, Savion, Bat Yam, Bnei Brak, Ramat Gan, Givat Shmuel, Petah Tikva and Givatayim.

According to the IDF announcement, one launch from Yemen was detected, unsuccessful interception attempts were made and a crash was detected in the area. Several interceptor missiles were launched at the Houthi ballistic missile – and all of them missed.

The Air Force is investigating the failure to intercept the ballistic missile. This, despite attempts to intercept it above and below the atmosphere.

The IDF stated: “The incident is still being thoroughly investigated, some of the lessons learned are already being applied, both in the field of interception and in the field of warning.” The IDF spokesman stressed: “It is not possible to go into detail beyond that about the air defense activity and the warning system in order to maintain the security of the information.” The IDF added: “The air defense is not hermetic and the directives of the Home Front Command must continue to be obeyed.”

It was reported in ‘Khan Haudas’ that after the detection of the ballistic missile from Yemen, and the activation of the alert in the central region, interceptors of the ‘Arrow’ array were launched into the upper layer of the atmosphere and missed the target outside Israel’s borders. Later, interceptors were launched towards the missile, this time in the lower layer of the atmosphere, which also missed the target.

The air defense system in Israel operates in layers and is called the ‘multi-layered defense system’. In the upper layer above the atmosphere the Arrow 3 and Arrow 2 arrays operate, in the middle layer the David Sling array and in the lower layer the Iron Spoon array.

It seems that in the fall in Jaffa, two layers of protection were penetrated – something found in the Air Force investigation.

Following the missile’s impact, a crater was created in a playground between buildings in the Baal Shem Tov and Dov streets of Mezritesh, south of Tel Aviv-Yafo.

MDA reported that 16 people were slightly injured by broken glass and were taken to Wolfson Hospital in Holon and Ichilov Hospital in Tel Aviv. In addition, 14 other people were injured on the way to a protected area and seven others died in panic. Teams from the Home Front Command are working at the scene alongside the security forces – the police, MDA and the fire brigade.

A medic from the MDA biker unit, Yosef Kurdi, who lives nearby, said: “I was at home and I heard a loud explosion. I immediately went to the scene and saw significant damage to the buildings near the place of the fall. Large MDA forces arrived quickly. We immediately started to search the buildings and wounded people started coming from the houses.”

MDA paramedic Noam Weisbuch and MDA senior medic Noa Shimoni added: “The scene was complex because the impact was in the apartments in the nearby buildings. In the beginning, a number of people with minor injuries from broken glass and panic attacks arrived. We searched the apartments, treated and evacuated from the scene 16 lightly injured people, including a 3-year-old girl, and we also treated anxiety victims.”
