Vanessa Guillén, a 20-year-old from Houston, Texas, was born at Ben Taub Hospital on September 30, 1999.
Her parents, Rogelio and Gloria Guillen, hail from the state of Zacatecas in Mexico, and Vanessa was one of six siblings.
She attended Hartman High School and, according to her family, graduated from César E. Chávez High School in 2018, where she was in the top 15% of her class.
Vanessa was an active and athletically built person who loved to play soccer, run and do various sports and study.
In June 2018, Vanessa joined the United States Army, where she trained to become a Small Arms and Artillery Serviceman with the Army Vocational Specialty 91F.
After her untimely death, Vanessa excelled in her duties and was posthumously promoted from the rank of Nun First Class to Specialist on July 1, 2020.
Vanessa’s tragic death attracted widespread attention. It sparked debates about the treatment of women in the military and the need for reforms to address sexual harassment and assault within the armed forces.

Who is Vanessa Guillen, Mayra Guillen’s sister?

Mayra Guillen, Vanessa Guillen’s sister, experienced a similar tragedy after her sister’s murder at Fort Hood nearly three years ago.
Mayra is now speaking out to raise awareness of the case of nun Ana Basaldua Ruiz, a 20-year-old soldier who was found dead at the same military facility earlier this month.
Mayra Guillen decided to use her voice to bring attention to Ana’s case and pay tribute to her sister Vanessa and others who have lost their lives to sexual harassment and violence.
Almost three years have passed since Vanessa’s death, but the pain is still fresh for Mayra and her family.
It was difficult to see another family go through the same ordeal, but Mayra is determined to use her experience and platform to help make a difference.
Vanessa Guillen’s family has been vocal in their criticism of the military’s handling of sexual harassment and assault cases. They hope that talking about Ana’s case will prevent other families from experiencing similar tragedies.
They also advocate for greater accountability and transparency of the military, demanding that those responsible for these crimes be held accountable for their actions.
The Vanessa Guillen murder case
Vanessa Guillén, 20, was killed on April 22, 2020, at an armory in Fort Hood, Texas.
The perpetrator was another soldier, Aaron David Robinson, who beat her to death.
About two months after Guillén’s disappearance, her dismembered remains were found buried along the Leon River on June 30.
After learning of the discovery, Robinson fled Fort Hood and eventually fatally shot himself when police tried to arrest him in nearby Killeen, Texas.
After Robinson’s girlfriend, Cecily Aguilar was taken into custody; authorities claimed she helped him dismember and bury Guillén’s body.
On July 2, 2020, Aguilar was indicted on one federal count of conspiracy to tamper with evidence.
On July 13, 2021, a federal grand jury indicted her on eleven counts.
Aguilar subsequently pleaded guilty to accessory after the fact to murder and three counts of perjury on November 29, 2022.
