Cause of death of David Bloom: How did he die?
NBC’s David Bloom died while working in Iraq on April 6, 2003. The war reporter was prepared for any danger, but the manner of his death surprised his family and the world.
The cause of death was complications of deep vein thrombosis.
Bloom had a fatal pulmonary embolism, or sudden blockage of a pulmonary artery, from a blood clot that formed in his legs and eventually migrated to his lungs.
This blood clot is thought to be partly caused by spending long days in cramped armored trucks.
As the U.S. 3rd Infantry Division moved north toward Baghdad, Bloom, 39, passed out while attached to the unit. He left behind three small children, Melanie, his wife and them.
