Cauthen’s father was a singer in the conservative Christian Church of Christ. On the other hand, Dad’s twin brother was the pastor of the same church.
His dad and uncle performed as a musical duo in the church. According to Cauthen, the church where he grew up emphasized a cappella singing what he called “hymns of the heavenly road, old songbooks.”
