Virginia Tech Men’s Tennis posted an online message on one of its official social media accounts Wednesday, confirming the tragic news.
“We are deeply saddened to announce that Martin Sayer has passed away,” the statement said. Although our hearts are heavy, we take comfort in knowing that those he touched will carry on his legacy.
Martin was a valued member of our athletic community whose unwavering commitment to our student-athletes and passion for tennis was evident.

Prior to the 2016 spring season, Martin joined the men’s tennis team as an assistant coach. He held that position for eight seasons.
Martin was an integral part of the team in three NCAA tournaments from 2016 to 2021. Martin Sayer was part of Radford University’s “dream team”.

Martin oversaw Joao Monteiro’s 2016 NCAA singles Final Four appearance, the furthest a Hokie has ever advanced in singles competition.
Monteiro was later joined by student-athletes Mitch Harper, Jason Kros and Ryan Fishback in making individual NCAA Tournament appearances.
While Martin was at Tech, five doubles teams also made NCAA tournament appearances. Martin was the head women’s tennis coach at Radford for two seasons, beginning in August 2013 until he was hired as an assistant coach for the Hokies in January 2016.
Prior to joining the Highlanders, he served as an assistant for the Radford men’s and women’s tennis teams and the Virginia Tech women’s tennis team.
Martin was a member of the coaching staff when the Highlanders won the 2010 Big South regular season championship and the 2011 Big South tournament championship.
Ivan Salec’s growth as a player en route to the 2010 and 2011 NCAA Tournament was significantly influenced by Martin. Martin set the bar for excellence as a player at Radford, and still does.
He was the program’s all-time leader in wins (114), was a four-time Big South Player of the Year and made four NCAA individual tournament appearances, twice as many as the Round of 16.
