An internal medicine consultant reveals the advantages of a glucose meter
Dr. Ashraf Al-Halouji, internal medicine and diabetes consultant at Cairo University, explained in a special statement to “Masrawy”:
The glucose meter is an essential tool for patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes, as it helps them monitor blood glucose levels accurately and easily, as well as being small in size and easy to carry, so it can be taken anywhere.
How does a glucose meter work?
The internal medicine consultant continued that the device helps measure the amount of glucose present in a small blood sample taken from the tip of the finger.
The difference between a glucose meter and an insulin injection
He pointed out that the glucose meter is used to diagnose diabetes and monitor its condition, in addition to measuring its levels periodically, and patients can use it at home or in the clinic.
As for insulin injections and tablets, they can be used to treat diabetes, as they help compensate for the lack of insulin in the body, and they are taken regularly according to the doctor’s prescription.
Prices of glucose meters
Prices of glucose meters vary greatly, as they are affected by several factors, including:
Device type:
Different types of glucose meters are available, such as blood glucose meters and non-prick glucose meters.
Device features:
The price also varies based on the features it provides, such as ease of use, measurement accuracy, and speed of results.
Number of test strips:
Small, single-use plastic strips, sold separately from the device, make up a large portion of the cost of measuring glucose.
Is it suitable for diabetics?
Al-Halouji added that the glucose meter is an essential tool for patients with both type 1 and type 2 diabetes, but the needs of each type differ in terms of the intensity of use of the device.
Type 1 diabetics need regular insulin injections, which makes a glucometer an indispensable tool for monitoring blood sugar levels and adjusting insulin doses.
Who does not need to use a glucose meter?
It is not recommended to use a glucose meter for children, due to the difficulty of understanding how to use the device.
How to use a glucose meter?
