British police sergeant Matiu “Matt” Ratana, who was born in New Zealand, was shot dead on 25 September 2020 in a police prison in London.
After almost 30 years of service with the Metropolitan Police, he was almost ready to retire when he was shot dead, making him the first police officer to be killed in the UK since the murders of Nicola Hughes and Fiona Bone in 2012.

The Matt Ratana Family: Meet His Kids and Wife
Su Bushby and Matt Ratana were married at the time of his passing. However, the number of children they had or the length of their marriage is not mentioned. Matt Ratana has died at the age of 54.
Ratana was of Māori descent and was born in the Hawke’s Bay area of New Zealand. He was born Matiu Ratana, but his family and colleagues called him Matt.

Ratana previously worked for the New Zealand Police before joining the British High Commission Wing in 2003.

Investigation into the circumstances surrounding the suspect, Louis De Zoysa, revealed that he had previously been referred to the Prevent program, an anti-extremism program designed to deter people from taking part in terrorist operations.

After being taken to the hospital, Ratana died of gunshot wounds. No police weapons were used during the event.
The initial pat on the person missed a non-police revolver, which was later found at the scene.
When the incident occurred, the suspect was handcuffed and had his hands behind his back. The event was caught on camera.
After the incident, several crime scenes were created and the perpetrator was accused of killing a police officer.
In June 2021, Louis De Zoysa was legally charged with Matt Ratana’s ****** after several months of hospital treatment.
The wheels of justice continued to turn and on 28 April 2023 De Zoysa entered a plea of not guilty to ****** at Northampton Crown Court via video link from the hospital.
The case was scheduled to start on June 6, 2023. On June 23, 2023, the trial was finally completed after a lengthy trial. Louis De Zoysa was found guilty of killing Sgt. Matt Ratana.
Considering the seriousness of the offense and the harm caused, the court sentenced the defendant to life in disobedience on July 27, 2023.
