A “strong message” to Israel from the European Union summit

European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said that European Union leaders will call for a sustainable ceasefire in Gaza during their summit in Brussels on Thursday.

He added before the start of the summit, “Today the Council will go much further” than in previous months.

He added, “The Council will demand a sustainable ceasefire, and will certainly also demand the liberation of the hostages, but it will express deep concern about the condition of the population in Gaza. This is unacceptable.”

Borrell called on Israel to ensure that more aid reaches Gaza, saying he hoped European Union leaders would do the same.

He continued, “They (the people of Gaza) are starving. So I hope that the Council will send a strong message to Israel to stop the embargo, stop preventing food from reaching Gaza, and take care of civilians.”

“Israel has the right to defend itself, not to take revenge.”
