(CNN) — The Egyptian presidency announced that Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi stressed “the necessity of an immediate ceasefire” in Gaza during his talks with US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken in Cairo on Thursday.

The presidency said that Sisi informed the American delegation that the Gaza Strip and its people “are exposed to a humanitarian catastrophe and famine that threatens the lives of innocent civilians.”

Sisi also warned of “the dangerous consequences of any military operation in the Palestinian city of Rafah.” [في جنوب غزة] He stressed the need for urgent action to implement sufficient amounts of humanitarian aid to the sector.

According to the Egyptian presidency, Blinken stressed the United States’ desire “to coordinate and consult with the aim of restoring stability and security in the region.”

Blinken arrived in Egypt on Thursday from Saudi Arabia in his latest visit to the region.
